Name: Christine Daaé Door:DOOR PASS: Submissive Canon: Phantom of the Opera Canon Point: Immediately post Notes/Twisted Every Way Age: 20 Appearance: Sierra Boggess History: here Personality: (Please note: keywords bold and italicized are intended as her negative traits) Christine is first and foremost a kind and compassionate young woman. She never truly has a mean thing to say to anyone- short of calling Carlotta ‘evil’ by insinuating that Christine was in cahoots with the Phantom in order to secure the leading role in his opera. Furthermore, she’s able to feel sympathy for him, despite the constant betrayal of her trust he exhibits. This not only feeds into her kindness, but also her completely blind sense of trust. She is far too trusting of others, expecting them to be worthy of it without them proving that they’re capable of being trusted. She’s optimistic in that she believes the best in people, and to a point, her own future. Early on, it can be seen that her trusting nature leads into giving her a complete lack of agency- she’s been manipulated into believing the Phantom was the Angel of Music that her father promised would visit her. As seen in the title song sequence, she is even further manipulated and hypnotized to a point where she’s following every command he gives her. She wants to trust him- so she does, even though he’s now revealed that he’s not a spirit or an angel, but a man living under the opera house. Throughout the show, she often reflects that she wants to disobey him and have a say of her own in things- but she still feels compelled to trust him and listen to what he says. She’s eager to listen to those she believes know best and often follows instruction without much question. Christine is naiive- she looks for wisdom in others, whether it’s Raoul, the Phantom, or even Madame Giry. She’s painfully innocent and doesn’t quite understand everything she should at this point in her life. It’s these traits that are so intertwined with her lack of agency and ability to blindly trust others that makes it a dangerous combination. It would be nice to think of her naivety as charming, but above all else, it’s what puts her in harm’s way more often than not. Her inability to think critically for herself without some sort of guidance, at this point in the show, is a weakness. She stood up for herself, but not without having a complete breakdown over everything going on. (And with good reason, she’s been antagonized for far too long at this point, and her optimism is fading.) Despite the manipulation of Christine throughout the show, she works hard for the opportunities she’s given. Though she secured the starring role in Hannibal by luck at first and her own talent (guided by her Angel of Music) second- she still went from being a chorus girl to starring diva in just a short amount of time. Learning the lyrics, blocking, lines, and everything that entails starring in a show, she had to study diligently. Her hard-working nature ensured that she would perform to her Angel’s and her own standards and be the breakout hit that all the papers were talking about the next day. We see this as well with her part in Il Muto, though she wasn’t aware that it was desired of her to have the main role. She went from the silent part to lead diva essentially overnight. Throughout her success, however, she doesn’t not seek these parts, nor the glory that goes with them. Though she is a gracious woman and thankful for all of her opportunities, she is humble and credits her tutor for much of her newfound fame. She realizes that without his help, she would not have the voice to be able to do any of this- though she had a good voice to begin with, he is the one who helped her become amazing. Her impulsive nature runs both negative and charming throughout the show- first seen when she displays it by mischievously pulling the Phantom’s mask from his face in his lair. To see what her Angel truly looks like, she faces the consequences of his anger throughout the rest of the show. She even gives into her impulsive nature later (post canon point) by removing his mask again- this time in front of a theatre full of people- again leading to less than desired consequences for her. In fact, the only time her impulsive nature seems to come in her favor is when she asks Raoul to commit to her completely and they wind up engaged. Of course, this also backfires on her as it stirs her stalker’s jealousy and anger. So, perhaps, there are no perks to her impulsive nature as of yet. Powers and Abilities: Christine possesses no supernatural powers or abilities. However, she is a skilled ballerina from her time in the opera corps du ballet and has received tutelage to further hone her singing, which she stopped when her father passed away and only started again when the Angel of Music visited her.
